The debate ”Professional association of planners – a right or an obligation”

We thank to those who have participated until now to the debate on "Professional association of planners – a right or an obligation", and we present some of the received opinions. Because of the shown interest, we announce that the debate will go on up to the 30th of June.

"The right to practice architecture and planning should be found in the free spirit of each practitioner."

"The need to establish quality criteria for architects/planners does not mean automatically that this should be done by the government, but it can be done by an organisation of practitioners. "

"Planning should be found in the free spirit and in the vision of each practitioner, and the right to practice should not be based on types of studies or plans. Everybody registered should be able to do everything in the field of planning."

"Insurance should be understood as an instrument to protect the client against the mistakes done by architects and planners. The obligation to be insured should be decided at the level of certified planners."

"The right to practise comes with the diploma of certain courses. Not every BA, MA and PhD is automatically qualified to be a professional. Only certain diplomas such as Technical Universities, Department of Architecture or Planning or the like automatically give the access to practise. It is here that the government already has an influence, so no additional decisions are required."

"The association of planners in an independent professional body is the only successful option (also used in western countries) to promote excellence in planning practice, and, based on professional ethic standards, would encourage a new modern philosophy, independent of political influence, or government interests. "

"The association of planners is beneficial and necessary to support and regulate the design activity, to support the professional interests of members, and as a consultative forum for enforcing regulation in the field of planning. I don’t think a government organisation should decide on the right to practice. "

"It is a coincidence that I am in a project we were discussing the need for the new planning institutes, planners to become certified, etc. We did not go further, but I do know a lot about the UK situation, and I am a certified planner – it took me two years postgraduate and supervised practise before I could use the professional letters after my name. However, it is not compulsory to be registered planner to be able to work in planning, it is however, considered to be important in legal cases."
